DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
milesperhour_ is proud to present AUDITION, an exciting new award-winning feature film that incorporates elements of reality-based competition into a compelling, character-driven story. Seamlessly intertwining the performances of one hundred actors into the portrayal of two main characters, the film blurs fact and fiction as it moves between the narrative plot and the audition process. Both innovative and captivating, AUDITION is a film that pushes the cinematic boundaries of characterization, representation and narrative, appealing to a broad audience ranging from art-house enthusiasts to the average moviegoer. At its heart, this film is really a tragic love story-that familiar, yet timeless plot that drives so many great movies. And by combining a raw, visceral depiction of this romance juxtaposed with the very real process of the actors' struggle to embody the characters, AUDITION creates a world of cinematic complexity that is both thought provoking and engrossing. As each scene of the film unfolds, the viewer becomes increasingly entangled in emotional identification and empathy with the characters, moving closer and closer into the intimate space of the film. Mirroring this progression, the pool of auditioning actors is increasingly distilled after each major act, continually highlighting the best performers until only two actors remain to play out the final terrifying act.

Matt Herron
Director, AUDITION

LOGLINE
A romance is portrayed by one hundred actors who audition for the two lead roles and the chance to perform the final terrifying act.

SHORT SYNOPSIS
What is real love? New York filmmaker Matt Herron spent over 15 years peeling back layers of expectations and disappointments to uncover the raw essence of this inescapable emotion through his powerful new award-winning film, AUDITION. Set in the midst of a real-life acting competition, this cautionary narrative within a documentary takes us on a provocative journey into the heart of one of the most profound questions most of us will ever face.

LONG SYNOPSIS
A romance is portrayed by 100 actors who compete for the two roles and the chance to play out the final terrifying act. AUDITION is a narrative film and acting competition combined. Each of 100 actors plays one of two roles, MAN or WOMAN, and all but two actors are gradually eliminated based on the strength of their performances. Each scene plays out once using a combination of the best performances, with the location, sound design, and story remaining consistent. The story follows a man and woman who meet at a crowded New York City party and immediately hit it off. They soon fall overwhelmingly in love, but a sudden change of heart leads to a powerful altercation.

There are three rounds to AUDITION.

FIRST ROUND
The first five scenes are covered collectively by all 100 actors (50 couples). Each actor completes one of the five scenes.

SECOND ROUND
The next three scenes are covered by the 10 actors (5 new couples) chosen to continue in the film. Each actor completes all three scenes.

FINALROUND
The next scene is completed by the four selected finalists. Each will act with both actors of the opposite sex.

FINAL ACT
The final act of the film is performed by the two actors awarded the lead roles.

AUDITION was shot chronologically over the course of one week in New York City in August 2012.

PRODUCTION NOTES
"SHOOTING STRATEGY"
In August 2012, AUDITION was shot chronologically over the course of one week in two separate lofts located in one building in New York City.

Two crews were used for principal photography. The narrative film crew consisted of camera and sound teams who recorded the scripted action on-set during production. Using narrative film techniques, they shot the scenes in real-time as the actors realistically portrayed the story. The documentary crew consisted of multiple documentary producers who freely recorded behind-the-scenes moments of actors in the waiting area and on set.

All the interviews and behind-the-scenes footage captured was unscripted, and in total over 250 hours of footage was shot.

"CASTING & MARKETING"
To raise awareness of AUDITION, its crowd-funding efforts and for the New York casting calls, the crew of AUDITION engaged in a year long street and digital marketing campaign, personally putting up thousands of stickers and posters throughout the streets of NYC, the United States, and world. Stickers as small as 4”x6 “and as large as 8’x10” were constantly seen in all areas Manhattan and New York City. Many remain today. All of this was photographed consistently and used to create awareness and excitement on all social media platforms.

With the help of the street campaign, social media, and acting forums––word of AUDITION spread. Over 15,000 headshots were submitted by the acting community. Over the period of a year, the casting team auditioned nearly 1000 applicants before deciding on the final 100.

All the actors in AUDITION were non-union at the time of filming.
